He owned rubber and timber plantations, traded in rice and was dubbed The Pineapple King of Singapore for canning home grown pineapple for export. \u00a0 A street in Clarke Quay where he owned warehouses is named in his honour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0While father was conferred a fourth ranking title by\u00a0 the Qing dynasty for his contributions, his son was to spend his wealth on revolution. Together with\u00a0 like minded and wealthy friends Teo Eng Hock and Lim Nee Soon, The Little Peach Club (\u5c0f\u6843\u5712) was set up\u00a0 as a platform for anti Qing activities. By now he had adopted the name\u00a0 Chor Nam, so his revolutionary activities would not affect the family business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0 three gentlemen embarked on a plan to galvanised support for a revolution in the motherland. They drew public attention to the cause when they appealed to the British Consul in Shanghai to stop two anti Qing detainees from being extradited for execution. They promoted revolutionary ideals\u00a0 through two local newspapers which they founded. And that\u2019s how Dr. Sun Yat Sen discovered that overseas Chinese in Singapore shared his vision for China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Their meeting was inevitable, and almost immediately after \u00a0 the Tong Meng Hui (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u540c\u76df\u4f1a; Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> born in 1906.\u00a0 The result of this union of minds and action resulted in no fewer than four \u00a0 uprisings that were planned and partly financed in Singapore between 1906-09. Dr. Sun&#8217;s revolutionary principles were mainly influenced by the American Revolution. These ideas were translated into a wave of fervor linking the birth of a modern society with mass education.\u00a0 The enthusiasm for\u00a0 girls&#8217; education in science and democracy\u00a0 post 1911 revolution in China culminated in a wave of support for vernacular schools.
