{"id":11601,"date":"2025-07-27T23:44:43","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T15:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bukitbrown.com\/main\/?page_id=11601"},"modified":"2025-09-29T06:37:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T22:37:37","slug":"history-panel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bukitbrown.com\/main\/wayfinder\/history-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"History Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>\u2018Tak kenal maka tak cinta\u2019<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her maiden speech to Parliament in 2012,\u00a0 NMP (Nominated Member of Parliament) Faizah Jamal defined what is land in relation to self and nation, framing\u00a0 it in terms of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;nature, national identity and character.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She spoke of\u00a0 an old Malay phrase<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ctak kenal maka tak cinta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d,\u00a0 loosely translated as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cyou cannot love what you do not know\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land she was speaking about was Bukit Brown Cemetery, which had been\u00a0 propelled into the headlines as a result of the government\u2019s announcement to build what is now Lornie HIghway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was an announcement that ignited nascent voices in heritage and habitat circles, which were to anchor themselves to established civil society &#8211; the Singapore Heritage Society (SHS) and the Nature Society of Singapore (NSS). Both submitted papers positioning the cemetery as a valuable heritage and historical site of early 19th century migrants which resided uniquely in a lush habitat that had flourished in benign neglect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The engagement between civil society and the government that played out in newspaper headlines was not without sound and fury.\u00a0 But It was in the midst of the din in 2012 that we found our voices to advocate and speak for saving Bukit Brown Cemetery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hit the road running with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCelebrating Bukit Brown\u201d, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a one-day\u00a0 exhibition and discussion on Bukit Brown\u2019s future with SHS at the Substation, followed by another\u00a0 eight-day exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Roots, Our Future<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chui Huay Lim Teochew Club.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In between, we contributed to an eight-part documentary series called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHistory from the Hills\u201d, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was translated into Chinese and Malay, and a Tedtalk by a brownie\u00a0 \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How I found my heart and home in Bukit Brown\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capped the year of 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2015 Singapore International Festival of the Arts included a tribute to Bukit Brown Cemetery in an onsite performance and a piece of forum theatre by Drama Box, which was played to critical acclaim. It was a community approach in its entirety involving\u00a0 all the stakeholders in Bukit Brown \u2013 descendants, academics, art practitioners and activists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWII@BukitBrown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed in 2016 &#8211; a collection of essays on the war dead to serve as a curtain raiser for the 75th anniversary commemoration of the fall of Singapore. We are working on a sequel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayfinder Bukit Brown was introduced in 2017 as a DIY primer to heritage, habitat and the history of the cemetery. Wayfinder 2025, has been upscaled, redesigned based on user feedback, and has now gone digital. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wayfinder Bukit Brown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWII@BukitBrown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> projects have been made possible with the help of grants from the National Heritage Board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have not journeyed alone \u2013 we are part of a wider community that consists of descendants,\u00a0 tomb keepers, clans, environmentalists, artists, academics, students, passionate individuals, and the general public who continue to contribute to the discourse surrounding the importance of Bukit Brown in diverse ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, Bukit Brown was the first and only site to date to receive a listing as a heritage site under threat\u00a0 by the World Monuments Fund, a leading independent organisation in global heritage preservation. It is still under threat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015,\u00a0 for also for the first time The Singapore Botanic Gardens was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inscribed as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is still our only site on this list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A distance of 12 km via road on Lornie Highway separates these two heritage sites.
