While searching for the\u00a0 biggest grave at Bukit Brown, I chanced upon this grave,\u00a0 drawn to its\u00a0 unusual mirror- like stand .<\/p>\n

Does it represent a mirror? (location Blk 1 near Group 4)<\/p><\/div>\n

I could not fathom the significance of the structure.\u00a0 And moved on to look for clues in the 2 pillars which flanked the tombstone and was stuck by the only two characters on each of the pillars.<\/p>\n

\u5f02\u9999 (extraordinary fragrance)<\/p><\/div>\n

The pillar one on the right read\u5f02\u9999 (extraordinary fragrance). I was wondering why \u5939\u9a6c\u5f02\u9999 was used. It appeared to me that this could well be a riddle. But it had become far too hot to decipher what it means at Bukit Brown.<\/p>\n

I studied the photographs of the pillars at home and came up with this answer:<\/p>\n

\u8d70 (walk) is the answer for \u5939\u9a6c (squeeze the horse with your calves to move the horse forward)<\/p>\n

\u5f02\u9999 (extraordinary fragrance) is from \u516b\u6708\u653e\u5f02\u9999 – a riddle which \u6842\u82b1is the answer. There is a classic song called\u00a0 “\u516b\u6708\u6842\u82b1\u904d\u5730\u9999” – ” August is the month for full boom of Osmanthus.” I therefore deduced that \u516b\u6708 is the answer for\u5f02\u9999.<\/p>\n

Buy some good \u6842\u82b1 tea to experience the unique fragrance of \u6842\u82b1.<\/p>\n

When I put \u8d70 and \u516b\u6708 together, it is \u8d75. \u8d75 –\u00a0Zhao (Hanyu Pinyin) –\u00a0 the surname of the deceased’s husband.<\/p>\n

The solution to the riddle<\/p><\/div>\n

\u5939\u9a6c=\u8d70<\/strong>
\n \u5f02\u9999=\u516b\u6708<\/strong>
\n \u8d70+\u516b\u6708=\u8d75<\/strong><\/p>\n

The riddle\u5939\u9a6c\u5f02\u9999<\/strong>solved at last!<\/p>\n

But the mirror, eludes me.<\/p>\n

Editor’s postscript: A few days hours after\u00a0 Cheng Min posed his riddle on the facebook group\u00a0 he got word from a tomb keeper that clocks were once embedded in such mirror structures . But not this one; the mystery continues,\u00a0 tick tock tick tock tick tock<\/em><\/p>\n
