The search for a long lost aunt buried at Bukit Brown\u00a0 began last year,\u00a0 when Miho Tan requested the help of\u00a0 Raymond and Charles Goh to locate his father’s sister. She provided these details<\/p>\n

\nAge\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 :\u00a0 18
\nYear of death : December 1932<\/p>\n

Following up this year,\u00a0 Raymond\u00a0 found Miho’s aunt\u00a0 and from her tomb inscription discerned that\u00a0 Tan Lay Chee died at the young age of 17 on Christmas Day, 1932.\u00a0 She was unmarried, but a boy was inscribed in the tomb as a “stepson”. According to the information Raymond\u00a0 gathered – the burial registry does record cause of death –\u00a0 she died of\u00a0 mo tan<\/em>,\u00a0 a\u00a0 kind of high fever.<\/p>\n

He recalls her family visiting her tomb a few years ago but\u00a0 they had forgotten the route as the surrounds had become quite inaccessible due to fallen trees and overgrowth.<\/p>\n

The family of Tan Lay Chee visited her soon after Raymond located her tomb, and\u00a0 brother Lay Chee connected once more\u00a0 with his elder\u00a0 sister.<\/p>\n

Also buried at Bukit Brown, is Miho’s grandfather.\u00a0 Miho captured a family visit to his tomb in February in a video here<\/a><\/p>\n

Grandfather Tan Choon Kiat was a book keeper and died at the relatively young age of 51 years old.<\/p>\n

Miho’s grandmother, Lim Geok Yan survived her husband by more than 30 years. She died just past her 80th birthday\u00a0 and her ashes are interred at Bright Hill Temple at Sin Ming. Her grandfather’s tomb, is a\u00a0 double tomb but he rests alone. It can be deduced that his wife\u00a0 was originally intended to rest side by side with him.<\/p>\n

The life and times of Lim Geok Yan\u00a0 is\u00a0 deeply etched in the mind of Miho’s father. He was the youngest of\u00a0\u00a0 8 children, 6 boys and 2 girls.\u00a0 We know she had to bury a child and as a young widow life must have been tough. Miho recalls what his father shared with him:<\/p>\n

“Being a tough nonya my Dad says she had to pawn her jewellery\u00a0 bit by bit in order to maintain the household , the daily expense had to cover (they lived in a\u00a0 traditional Peranankan house), around 16 members which included 7 “cha bor kan” – Hokkien for\u00a0 maids.\u00a0 She was\u00a0 a strict mother too (Dad did not elaborate).\u00a0 I’m sure she would have been been\u00a0 a strict grandmother too and maybe I’ll be allowed to wear traditional Baba wear on\u00a0 special days.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Miho remembers\u00a0 being taken to the Baba House, <\/a>where her father pointed to a portrait of\u00a0 Lim Ho Puan hanging there, and he said to Miho, “there, that is your\u00a0chor kong –<\/em> (Hokkien for great grandfather)”<\/p>\n

Lim Ho Puan is among\u00a0 a list of luminaries which include Lim Boon Keng, Lim Nee Soon and Lim Yew Hock named in the book Singapore Chinese Society in Transition<\/a>, Business, Politics and Socio Economic Change, 1945 – 1967<\/em><\/p>\n

A simple tomb of a long lost aunt, has become for the niece who never knew her, a touch stone\u00a0 revealing\u00a0 a family history\u00a0 which is both personal and historical.<\/p>\n
