What was life like in Singapore when the\u00a0Maria Hertogh riots of December 1950\u00a0broke out; when Mr Lee Kuan Yew\u00a0became the Prime Minister in June 1959; and when\u00a0the Beatles became the leading pop group in 1964? Alex Tan, the treasure trove of tales from bygone\u00a0times, will bring us back in time, and indulge us\u00a0with, among other things,\u00a0the glitzy world of the gentlemen\u2019s clubs at\u00a0Club street: the China\u00a0Weekly Entertainment,\u00a0Goh Lor Club and Ee Ho\u00a0Hean; and\u00a0the social life of youth\u00a0in the 50s and 60s \u2013 the\u00a0dating\u00a0scene,\u00a0ferocious\u00a0gangster\u00a0scene,\u00a0popular\u00a0music\u00a0and more.<\/p>\n

Alex Tan Tiong Hee is the second son of Tan Yeok Seong a man with a deep interest in Nanyang\u00a0or Overseas Chinese history and who in 1964 gave his entire book collection known as the Ya Yin\u00a0Kwan Collection to the National Library for the purpose of (in his words) \u201creaching out to the\u00a0minds of future generations of Singaporeans that they would know more about who they are and\u00a0how they come to be where they are today\u201d.<\/p>\n
