In Group 6, there is a Mr Leow Chia Heng. Can somebody share more information on this gentleman?
hello! Thank you for visiting our blog. In fact, we just visited Leow’s grave last week and are doing some research now. Look out for our post soon. May we know your interest? Are you related?
This is my great grandfather, who had two sons. The elder son is adopted and from what I am told by my oldest cousin was that this son came from a “kwa” family.
About Liao (Leow) Chia Heng
– Was a Ching officer
– Came Rich to Singapore from Swatow, China. Understand the town in china still have his gate.
– Served as Justice of the Peace and an Arbitrator
– Referenced in several books (Dr Song’s)
– Home was no 5 Cumming Street (Presently where the subordinate court sits) No 5 was a big mansion (probably the biggest 3 floors mansions then).
– NUS Law prize “The Leow Chia Heng Prize” is named after him
– Understand once one of the founder of the Four Sea Bank (logo of OCBC)
– More of a royalist (Kang Yu Wei) than a nationalist (Sun Yat Sen)
– Died 1931 at 51, left many properties and cash of 1.3 million $. left a inheritance to his children and children children (only sons). His son (included even his tomb) and his son’s son (10 of thems 6 from the first wife, 4 from his 3rd wife). don’t know about the other own son side as I’m from the first son lineage.
Left to each son supposely a bungalow which instead they lived in HDBs – so sad when you are led by unscrupulous lawyers when education was low.
– Prominent trader in gambier, etc. If you go to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Leow chia Heng is one of the earliest of President.
– His hobby was a garden in present day thomson rd, near to caldecott hills where the present florists are located. Understands he gave it away.
His children all married prominent businessmen’s daughters (not much about these background those)
Just look at his tomb – good solid material and the way it overlooks the surrounds and the shapes looks so “official”.
Thanks for asking
I am also trying to find out more and if you have any do bookmarked me.
Just a distant pride now.
T H Leow
